Digital Tools in Phenomenon-Based Learning: Experiential Education in Lapland

The course provides adult education teachers with practical ways to use digital tools in phenomenon-based learning. The learning environment is Lapland and its natural surroundings, which enable diverse nature-based and experiential learning experiences. Participants produce photos, videos, and other digital content that are used in portfolio work. Special attention is given to accessibility when using digital tools in adult education.

The course meets the Erasmus+ quality standards: Quality standards for courses under Key Action 1 (learning mobility of individuals) – Erasmus+.

Three course sessions are available:

After enrolment you will receive an invoice in your email. You will confirm your participation by payment. After confirmation the participation can’t be canceled.

The participant:

  • gains practical skills in using digital tools for planning and implementing phenomenon-based learning
  • learns to use the nature of Lapland and the local environment as a learning environment in phenomenon-based learning
  • develops skills in producing photos, videos, and other digital content to support teaching and the learning process
  • learns to use digital portfolio work to document and assess learning
  • understands the importance of accessibility and is able to apply accessibility principles when using digital tools
  • gains methods for participatory and experiential learning that support students’ motivation and collaboration

Monday: Arrival, evening snack will be served.

Tuesday: Training (6 hours), held at the institute and in its nearby surroundings.

In the evening, an optional visit to Sweden to explore the culture of the Tornio Valley. The programme may also include a sauna. Price: € 90 per participant.

Wednesday: Training (6 hours), held at an outdoor natural site outside the institute. The day’s programme and meals will take place outdoors. Weather permitting.

Thursday: Training (5 hours), held at the institute and in its nearby surroundings. Departure after afternoon coffee.

The price is 670 € per participants.

Includes accommodation in single rooms at Hotel Joentalo as well as meals (breakfast, lunch, afternoon coffee, dinner, and evening snack). Evening snacks are served as a cold buffet.

The price also includes transportation to the training location on Wednesday and programme activities.

Participants should bring their own laptop and smartphone, on which a video editing application can be installed. The course provider will supply digital tools if needed.

Google tools will be used for pre-assignments and during the training.

Clothing and footwear suitable for autumm / winter outdoor activities are required.

The course will be delivered by a experienced teacher and teaching assistant with strong expertise in group-building, the pedagogical use of digital tools, and outdoor education. Their training approach emphasizes practicality and participatory working methods.

Peräpohjolan Opisto is a folk high school with a history spanning over 120 years, located in Tornio, Finnish Lapland, near the Swedish border. We provide vocational education and training in youth work and early childhood education and care. In addition, we offer integration training for immigrants as well as a wide range of liberal adult education courses. The institute has approximately 250 students.

The course provider reserves the right to cancel the course should the minimum enrolment of 15 participants not be reached.

Cancellation of participation and reimbursement in cases of events beyond the control of the participant and the course provider (such as natural disasters or serious transport disruptions) are included in the course terms and conditions.
